Knights Templar Museum in Toledo, Spain

We came across el Museo de los Templarios Caballeros (The Knights Templar museum) by chance, but oddly enough, I had just watched a series of documentaries about these religious order on television the month before.

The Knights Templar were founded in the year 1119 with the mission of protecting Christians who were traveling to Jerusalem, which had recently been capture by the crusaders. The order was powerful militarily and politically.  Most unusual, though, was that the soldiers took an oath of poverty.

Later that century, Muslim forces re-took Jerusalem and the Knights Templar were forced to re-locate. The order lost their mission and their importance.

You’ll learn all this, as well as seeing clothing and military gear from the period in this small museum.
